Like many players, if you know how to appreciate the modern video game, its 4K graphics, its 60 fps and its lightning loading via the famous “magic ssds“, you may also be keeping an eye on the games of yesteryear. Indeed, for some years now, the “retrogaming” wave has reached many players, especially those who grew up in the 80s/90s/2000s, with this desire to reconnect with the games of the past, many of them having retained a will be very special today.

A two player mode in Super Punch-Out??
Many take pleasure in simply reviving a good old Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Mega Man, Sonic or PC Kid on their original media, or through the magic of emulation, and all can rediscover the sensations of yesteryear, some games that irretrievably bring back very personal memories for everyone. Some have also decided to scrutinize our period games with very modern tools, and sometimes with some excellent surprises in store.
Thus, users like Upsilander have fun dissecting our period games, for very in-depth technical analyzes (and which we warmly recommend), when others like SEGA Dreamcast Info manage to unearth some scoops, such as the identity of the famous punk from the SEGA advertisements of the 90s. A few weeks ago, we also discovered an incredible secret about Tetris version NES thanks to Sophie Krupa and Recalboxwhich makes it easy to finish the game.

Finally, some users are responsible for bringing to light other secrets, often well hidden too, and which have eluded us for decades. Recently, a “secret” of Super Mario Bros first of the name was brought to light, and for a few hours, it is a mythical Super Nintendo game that has been talked about again: Super Punch-Out.
Indeed, this sequel to the excellent Punch-Out launched on the NES a few years ago remains a timeless item in the SNES toy library, and allows you to embody Mac, with a very “arcade“, requiring to face boxers in a defined order, until the last fighter falls. A game launched 28 years ago, to which we sometimes come back with pleasure, but which we thought we had largely covered…
BUT NOOO!!! 😱😱
30 years later, we learn that in Super Punch-Out on Super Nintendo, there is a “Free Play” mode, and even a mode… 2 players!!! 🥊🥊
Just a little manipulation on controller 2 and you’re done 🤗

However, by poking around a bit, we recently discovered that Super Punch-Out allowed you to enjoy a “free play” mode. On the title screen, by holding the Y and R buttons on controller 2, just press Start on controller 1 to access an interface allowing you to choose the fight of your choice. And that’s not all, since from this same interface, you can activate… a two-player mode!
Since always, Super Punch-Out is categorized as a game “for one player“, but by holding the B and Y buttons on controller 2, then pressing the Start button, players 1 and 2 will be able to compete, the first embodying Mac, the second the boxer selected a few seconds earlier. Note that the manipulation works on the original version of the game, but also on Super Nintendo Mini, on the version offered via Nintendo Switch Online, as well as on emulators. However, it is difficult to know why Nintendo has kept this secret secret for all these years, even if this mode looks more like a debug mode intended for game developers and/or beta testers than a “true 2 player mode“. Still, the latter is perfectly playable, and that’s the main thing.
A trick hitherto totally unknown, and which therefore allows, 28 years later, to face in 1 vs 1 your childhood gaming partner on your favorite game. Crazy, right?
