For a few years now, the most prominent video game licenses have been the subject of a cinematographic adaptation. We are thinking in particular of Resident Evil, Uncharted, Assassin’s Creed, Tomb Raider, Monster Hunter, Mortal Kombat or even Silent Hill. However, some studios take the risk of transposing franchises that are more difficult to transform into “film“, as was the case recently with Sonic or Detective Pikachu.
A Pac-Man movie in the boxes
On the side of Sonic, the success is also there, since after two episodes all in all very correct, a Sonic 3 has already been formalized for the end of the year 2024. , it is Wayfarer Studio (at the origin of Clouds on Disney +) which announces a new film drawn again from a license that could not be more cult: Pac-Man.
Indeed, the little yellow ball so dear to many players, as well as to Bandai-Namco, will in turn be transposed to the big screen, thanks in particular to the magic of Chuck Williams of Lightbeam Entertainment, already at the controls of the Sonic films. . For the record, Pac-Man has already been adapted on the small screen in the 80s, but also more recently on the side of Disney XD. We also saw the little yellow ball in the 2015 movie Pixels, starring Adam Sandler.
It is therefore the first time that this emblematic video game franchise, born in 1980, will be entitled to its own film in the cinema. At present, no release date has been mentioned, nor even the slightest detail concerning the plot of the film or the way in which the character of Pac-Man will be transposed to the screen.
Still, this type of adaptation can be very profitable, with movies like Detective Pikachu and Sonic both amassing over $400 million at the box office, while garnering very positive reviews overall. It now remains to wait wisely to find out what form this umpteenth video game adaptation will take, and if Pac-Man is able to attract crowds to cinemas, more than 40 years after its first appearance in arcades.
