A few days ago, HBO Max aired the very first episode of the House of the Dragon series, which is a prequel to the Games of Thrones series. The events recounted in the new series take place 170 years before the era of Game of Thrones, and notably recalls the beginnings of the Dance of the Dragons, a war which caused the fall of House Targaryen in addition to the extinction of the dragons. A series adapted from the novel Fire and Blood by George RR Martin.
House of the Dragon benefits (obviously) from the aura of Game of Thrones… and vice versa!
And the least we can say is that the launch was particularly successful for HBO, this first episode of course taking advantage of the Game of Thrones aura, despite a last season that was questionable to say the least. In total, 10 million Americans responded to HBO’s call to discover the first episode of this new series, which notably had the effect of crashing the servers. To be quite precise: “The premiere of ‘House of the Dragon’ drew 9.986 million viewers on linear and HBO Max platforms in the United States”explains HBO in a press release.
Enough to allow HBO Max to break an audience record for a new original series. The American company is also delighted to announce that the series has also been talked about on social networks, in particular on Twitter and Google Trends, the subject having climbed to the first position on the day of the premiere. Remember that a new episode will be added every week, with the big “Season Finalescheduled for October 23.

Interestingly, the ‘Game of Thrones’ original series just wrapped up its strongest week yet on HBO Max, capping a seven-week period of week-over-week growth leading up to the premiere of ‘House. of the Dragon”. The weekly average of “Game of Thrones” in August is thus almost 90% higher than that of June and almost 50% higher than that of July.
On the competition side, at Amazon Video, we will broadcast in a few days the first episode of another highly anticipated series, namely The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. It remains to be seen now if the return to Middle-earth will be even more followed than the return to Westeros.
