With the Pro models of the iPhone 14 series presented this week, Apple finally adopts the 48 megapixel photo sensors. But for a while, some brands have already been offering devices with 108-megapixel sensors. And Motorola, for its part, markets a device with a sensor of… 200 megapixels.
In August, the brand had presented, in China, the Motorola Edge 30 Pro, the first smartphone equipped with such a photo sensor. Unfortunately, the announcement only concerned the Middle Kingdom.
But the good news is that another model has just been made official, the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra, which will be marketed internationally. And like the Pro, this one has a 200-megapixel main sensor. As the brand explains, it’s “the highest resolution camera available on the market today. »
200 megapixels, what is it for?
This 200 megapixel sensor is provided by Samsung, which is today the only company to offer this component to smartphone manufacturers. And like the 108-megapixel sensors, the 200-megapixel sensor will take ultra-detailed images when the light is good.
On the other hand, when it is low, the sensor applies the technique called pixel bining. On the 200 megapixel sensor, this will merge 16 adjacent pixels to capture more light and thus output a higher quality photo, but at a lower resolution of 12.5 megapixels.

On the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra, this Samsung sensor is accompanied by a 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens with x2 optical zoom. Note that the smartphone can also film in 8K at 30 fps.
A high-end smartphone with a particular camera
In addition to this camera which distinguishes it, for the moment, from all other smartphones, the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra has, on its technical sheet, everything expected of a high-end smartphone of 2022. Under the hood, we have the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, which guarantees excellent performance. This chip is accompanied by a 12 GB RAM memory, and 256 GB of storage.
On the screen side, while smartphone manufacturers are generally content with refresh rates at 120 Hz, the 6.67-inch OLED screen of this model allows even more fluidity (especially for games) thanks to its very high refresh rate. 144Hz.
The battery has a capacity of 4610 mAh, which allows, according to the manufacturer, to have an autonomy of one day. In addition, Motorola has equipped the Edge 30 Ultra with a very efficient fast charging technology, at 125 W. According to the manufacturer, after 7 minutes of charging, you have enough to last a day.
Moreover, compared to other high-end models of 2022, the Motorola Egde 30 Ultra has a price that can be considered reasonable: 899 euros!
Otherwise, it should be noted that currently, Samsung does not yet use its 200 megapixel sensors on its own smartphones. Nevertheless, rumors suggest that next year one of the Galaxy S23 models could finally take advantage of this component.
