The year 2022 is clearly the year of foldable smartphones. Between the particularly successful Galaxy Z Fold 4, the launch of the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 in China and the group launch of a Motorola foldable smartphone, OnePlus could not stay on the sidelines.
The OenPlus brand has in fact distinguished itself from the outset by innovative, high-performance premium products offered at a reasonable price. We can therefore expect a lot of good things from the brand’s foray into foldable smartphones.
OnePlus is indeed working on a foldable smartphone according to Pete Lau
For the time being, OnePlus has never officially revealed that it is developing a foldable smartphone. However, the latest tweet from its co-founder Pete Lau seems to indicate that a OnePlus foldable smartphone is well on its way. And that the development of its most critical component – the hinge – is well advanced.
In one of his latest Tweets, Pete Lau indeed shares two photos of what looks like a real masterpiece of engineering. The hinge of foldable smartphones is necessarily very complex for several reasons. The first is that it must minimize as much as possible the crease visible on the Flexible OLED panel.
It should be robust, and ideally offer several “notches” in which the position freezes – all while giving the impression of robustness. Finally, this element must be durable and resistant to dust and sand. The first owners of Samsung foldable smartphones quickly noticed the fragility of this part of the smartphone.
That the brand has improved with each generation, to the point that the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is more resistant to dust… and even allows itself the luxury of being waterproof (it is IPX8 certified for immersion up to 1.5 m for 30 minutes). We can also quite easily appreciate the sophistication of this element on the future OnePlus smartphone thanks to the images shared by Pete Lau.
