It was in May 2019 that the creation of PlayStation Productions was formalized by Sony. With this subsidiary, the idea was to create a team specializing in PlayStation exclusives in order to design unique projects to adapt the numerous PlayStation Studios licenses into films for cinema or TV series on the various streaming platforms.
Led by Asad Quizilbash, the current vice-president of marketing at PlayStation, this new studio has just been established in Los Angeles, right next to the premises of Sony Pictures. It will undoubtedly be a central part of Sony and PlayStation’s business strategy in the coming months and years to come.
This week, PlayStation Productions ushered in its first project with the release of the Uncharted movie. This is an opportunity for us to offer you this file, in order to take stock of all the adaptations that are in progress and that we will see flourish on our screens (small and large) in the not so distant future.
Note that at the time of the creation of PlayStation Productions, Sony confirmed that 10 projects were currently in production, ie seven series and three films.
The Uncharted movie

It was therefore at the beginning of 2008 (a few weeks after the release of the first Uncharted Drake’s Fortune on PS3) that the project was announced. After this announcement, the Uncharted film will experience more than 12 years of adventures and galleys to finally arrive on February 16, 2022 in dark rooms. It represents the first official production of PlayStation Production.
It was during the summer of 2019 that the project passed into the hands of PlayStation Productions after 11 years of difficulties. The film traces the youth of Nathan Drake (played by Tom Holland) and his mentor Victor “Sully” Sullivan (played by Mark Wahlberg) alongside the sulphurous Chloé Frazer (Sophia Taylor Ali). Nate goes in search of the famous treasure of Magellan and faces a horde of enemies led by Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas).
It’s a film that pays a nice tribute to the Naughty Dog series with nice references to Uncharted 3 and Uncharted 4.

The Last Of Us series on HBO

In March 2020, Naughty Dog, PlayStation and HBO teamed up to announce the production of a series on The Last Of Us. A dream team was announced to produce with Neil Druckmann (creator of The Last Of Us, co-president of Naughty Dog), Evan Wells (co-president of Naughty Dog), Craig Mazin (director of the series Chernobyl) and Carolyn Strauss (producer of the series Game of Thrones).
The series will retrace the story of Joel and Ellie in the first game of the saga. We will also find Ellie’s past in the DLC Left Behind and we should have many new moments that we have never seen in Naughty Dog games. On the casting side, Joël will be played by Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian) and Ellie by Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones).

During an interview for the American magazine Hollywood Reporter, the co-president of HBO, Casey Bloys, confirmed that the series The Last Of Us should be released at the beginning of the year 2023. Unfortunately, the co-president of HBO does not does not give more information and does not specify more things. On the other hand, he has great hopes that The Last Of Us can be nominated for the Emmy Awards of 2023.

The Twisted Metal Series

As soon as the creation of PlayStation Productions was announced in May 2019, the first rumors around a Twisted Metal series emerged on the Internet. In February 2021, the project was formalized by Sony. The series should feature the main character of the game, the Machiavellian clown John Doe who will be played by actor Anthony Mackie.
Twisted Metal games offered players fiery rounds of derby destruction on PS1, PS2 and the latest installment released in 2012 on PS3. It promises a lot of action and explosion to come. According to the first rumors, the series should put forward a character in search of redemption who wishes to change his life. To do this, he will have to come out alive from crossing a post-apocalyptic desert in order to deliver a special package.
[mise à jour 14 avril 2022] During a recent interview, Anthonie Mackie (the main actor of the series) declared that he had started a diet to embody his visibly muscular character and that the filming of the series should begin in a few weeks. Things should therefore accelerate for the Twisted Metal series.
[mise à jour 17 mai 2022] The Deadline site announces that actress Stephanie Beatriz, who played cold detective Rosa Diaz in the crime and comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, has joined the cast of the Twisted Metal series. She will play the role of Quiet alongside John Doe who will therefore be well interpreted by Anthony Mackie.

New Sucker Punch license released in July 2020 on PS4 (then in August 2021 on PS5), Ghost of Tsushima will be entitled to its film adaptation. At the moment we don’t have much information. We only know that the film will trace the story of Jin Sakai that we could discover in the game.
[mise à jour 14 avril 2022] While we already knew that the film would be directed by Chad Stahelski (the man to whom we owe the John Wicks), the Deadline site announced today that the screenwriter of the film will be Takashi Doscher. The latter has already been able to direct several feature films such as the science fiction film Only in 2019 or Still, a film exclusive to Hulu (Disney) in 2018.
[mise à jour 15 août 2022] After several weeks without news of the production of the film Ghost of Tsushima, we learned that an important decision had just been taken by the director Chad Stahelski. With the support of Sony, the latter took the decision to make the film entirely in Japanese. This means that the VO will be in Japanese, but that the entire cast will also be Japanese to offer an adaptation very faithful to the story of the game. Chab Stahelski declared: “I think if we do this right, the project is going to be visually stunning. It’s a character-driven story. This is the opportunity to make great action sequences, with great aesthetics. And honestly, that’s what we intend to do. It is a fundamentally Japanese story in which the Mongols invade the island of Tsushima. An entirely Japanese cast, for a film in Japanese. Sony supports this decision”.

Gran Turismo movie information

Announced in 2013, the film Gran Turismo was to retrace the history of the drivers of the GT Academy with a young man champion of video games, trying to find a place in real car racing. Basically, Kevin Spacey was to take care of the production and Alex Tse of the screenplay. But since then, no more news.
In February 2022, the rumors are revived on the Twitter account of a producer of PlayStation Production which listed a Gran Turismo project in the current productions.
On June 15, 2022, we learned that the project around Gran Turismo was a film and that the release of the latter was already set for August 11, 2023. As for the synopsis, we are on real facts with a teenager who will direct his dream by becoming a professional racing driver thanks to the Gran Turismo Academy (GT Academy).

The Sly Cooper Series

In 2016, a Sly Cooper movie was announced through a first trailer. Subsequently, the film will be abandoned to become a series which was to be released in two parts, first at the end of the year 2019 and during the summer of 2020. Since then, we have had no news of the Sly series (and of a potential fifth opus).
Much like the Uncharted movie and the Gran Turismo project, PlayStation Production is rumored to have picked up the project.
The God of War movie or series

To date, no official announcement. On the other hand, many rumors seem to evoke the production of a film or a series on the adventures of Kratos. Knowing that God of War Ragnarök is expected this year on PS5, this would not be surprising.
Update – March 9, 2022: The American media Deadline Hollywood confirms the negotiations between Sony and Amazon to adapt the God of War series on Prime Video. According to the first information, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (The Expanse) should be the creators/executive producers of the project. Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time) has reportedly been cast as executive producer and showrunner. As with The Last Of Us series, Sony Pictures, PlayStation Productions and Santa Monica Studios (the developers) would likely be co-producers on the adaptation.

Never two without three ? After Uncharted and The Last Of Us, could Naughty Dog’s Jak & Daxter license be adapted into a film or series? A few days before the release of the Uncharted film, director Ruben Fleicher announced that he was working with PlayStation on an adaptation of the famous franchise. A few days earlier, Tom Holland (the actor who plays Nathan Drake in the film Uncharted) announced that he dreamed of playing Jak in an adaptation of Jak & Daxter. Could that be a lot of coincidences?
