Sony has always been a must in the high-tech market. Unfortunately, on the smartphone level, the Japanese brand has been overtaken by the competition. Indeed, the many Xperias have failed to win the hearts of enthusiasts. But 2021’s latest Sony Xperia 1 III seemed to buck the trend, with an innovative camera system, powerful performance and cutting-edge audio. Now the Sony Xperia 1 IV is announced, featuring a few upgrades to satisfy the growing appetite of Sony fans. Technical sheet, price… here is what there is to know about the smartphone!

Design and display

The appearance of the Xperia 1 IV is not much different from the Xperia 1 III. We find with pleasure the same long and slender design, with slightly flatter edges. The dimensions seem to be very slightly different: the Xperia 1 IV measures 164.7 x 70.8 x 8.3mm , which is slightly smaller and less wide than the Xperia 1 III.

The smartphone is equipped with new front-facing stereo speakers . These offer a 10% increase in maximum volume and 20-50% more bass than its predecessor. The 3.5 mm headphone jack also remains present: the Xperia 1 IV therefore remains one of the few current high-end smartphones to be compatible with wired headphones.

Finally, it is water and dust resistant, rated under IP68/IPX5 . It is available in three colors: black, white and purple.

The Xperia 1 IV has a 6.5-inch OLED screen in 21:9 format . It is also equipped with 4K resolution with a refresh rate of 120Hz . You also get HDR as well as Bravia HDR . So expect a marked increase in contrast, color and clarity on the smartphone.

Technical sheet

Sony has incorporated improvements under the hood of its latest smartphone. The latter runs under the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor , coupled with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage . Admittedly, this is a first for the Japanese brand, but not yet enough to dethrone the giants Samsung and Apple.

The battery size has also increased from 4500 mAh to 5000 mAh . Fast charging remains similar to the Xperia 1 III (from 0 to 50% in 30 minutes *). 30W wireless charging is also included.

But the real innovation of the Xperia 1 IV lies in the camera. The Japanese brand has equipped its smartphone with the ” world’s first true optical zoom lens “ . The latter has an 85-125mm equivalent zoom range, ideal for macro photography or capturing subjects at a long distance.

Three of the four cameras on the back of the device use 12MP sensors , offering the ability to shoot 5x slow-motion video at 4K 120fps resolution. The front camera can also record 4K HDR videos.

Sony Xperia 1 IV release date and price

Sony officially announced the Xperia 1 IV on May 11, 2022, alongside the Xperia 10 IV. It then went on sale in the UK, Europe and the US on June 16, 2022 . For the moment, the smartphone is not marketed in the rest of the world. Price-wise, the 12GB RAM/256GB version costs $1,399 , while the US model (which comes with 512GB of storage) is priced at $1,599.99 .
