It is the most expensive series ever produced. Amazon Prime Video has been streaming since last Friday The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The press reviews are generally positive, while the public also responds well. Thus, according to figures provided by the streaming platform, the prequel was viewed by more than 25 million viewers during its first day of broadcast, a new record for the service.
Has Amazon found the ultimate weapon against trolls?
But, The Rings of Power also unfortunately has to deal with an army of online trolls. If everyone has the right to have a negative opinion on the series, the evaluations unfortunately have nothing artistic here, and some are simply racist or sexist. A review bombing strategy is even underway. Concretely, Internet users give each other the word to artificially lower the evaluation of the series on the rating platforms.
This tactic pays off, as the public rating is only 1.9 out of 10 on Metacritic and 39% on Rotten Tomatoes. In this context, Amazon has a new weapon to deal with these toxic Internet users. A new 72-hour deadline for validating user reviews was indeed subtly introduced in the middle of August. This period of time then makes it possible to evaluate each opinion in order to verify that it is not the work of a bot, or if it does not contravene the rules.
As reported by our colleagues from variety, this new rule seems to have worked. And during its verification, the specialized media found that the series obtained a rating of 4.3 stars out of 5 on Prime Video, while 80% of customers gave it five stars and 14% one star.
The broadcast continues for The Rings of Power and we will be able to watch the third episode this Friday. In the meantime, you can always re-read our cross review of the series to get an opinion.
