Every year, Apple makes its September comeback by unveiling its new iPhones. In 2022, the stars of the keynote are therefore the iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. Yes, you read correctly, Apple is saying goodbye to the mini format, obviously not appreciated by users.
If the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus are part of a certain continuity, the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max display a brand new design, in any case from the front, with a punch in the shape of a pill. The entire range is equipped with brand new photo sensors with, for the Pro models and for the first time in the history of the iPhone, a 48 Mpxl sensor.
So we were able get hands-on with the new iPhone 14 and 14 Pro at Apple Park. Discover our first impressions, while waiting for our more complete tests.
iPhone 14 and 14 Plus: heirs to the iPhone 13
Aesthetically, the iPhone 14 looks like two drops of water to the iPhone 13. Same chassis, same shiny coating with a bunch of flashy colors, same sensations in hand. The only notable novelty is therefore the launch of an iPhone 14 Plus instead of the mini format, with a 6.7” screen.
Apart from larger photo sensors (legacy of the iPhone 13 Pro) and algorithmic improvements, the camera does not change. Apple still promises better overall quality, especially in low light. A new Action mode makes it possible to film moving subjects with remarkable stabilization (to be verified during a test).
In another era, Apple would probably have called the iPhone 14 iPhone 13S. That would probably have seemed closer to reality.
Prices, precisely, bring us back to this reality. If Apple maintains the same prices in the United States, the case is quite different in France. The iPhone 14 starts at 1,019 euros, or 110 euros more than the iPhone 13 last year. The latter remains in the catalog, at the same price as when it was released. That is to say…
iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max: Apple’s lesson
Rumors about the new iPhone 14 Pro notch made trolls of all kinds smile a lot. This was without counting on the company’s know-how in terms of software optimization. With Dynamic IslandApple transforms the punch of the new TrueDepth camera (reduced by 50% all the same) into useful software functionality on a daily basis.
Dynamic Islandthis is THE big novelty of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. At the location of the notch, contextual elements are visible and the user can interact with them. With some apps, a pop-up window displays an interface at the top of the screen to access additional controls.
This software innovation is a real demonstration of the brand’s know-how, and a lesson to all its competitors who, for three years, have still not found any way to take advantage of this unsightly element.
For the rest, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are on board a new A16 Bionic chip ever more powerful and energy efficient. On the photo side, Apple goes all out with a main sensor of 48 Mpxl, a first for an iPhone. We also really like the return of the telephoto lens with 2x zoom instead of 3x. Everything is obviously accompanied by new, even more amazing algorithms.
In hand, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max therefore remain the same as the 13 Pro and Pro Max. The integration of the new Face ID with the Dynamic Island is actually the biggest upheaval in usage. It remains to be seen what the new photo optics are worth.
If the first impressions of these iPhone 14 Pro / Pro Max prove conclusive, we remain flabbergasted by Apple’s price plan in France. The iPhone 14 Pro is available from 1,329 euros, the iPhone 14 Pro Max at 1,479 euros. The iPhone that costs more than a minimum wage is now the norm at Apple…
