In general, activating an iPhone that you have just bought (new or used) is a formality: all you have to do is insert a SIM card and follow the instructions that appear. But there are also those rare (but no less frustrating) cases where nothing happens after inserting the SIM card. The No SIM card error message keeps popping up, preventing you from activating your smartphone. So what to do?
What can cause SIM card problems on iPhone?
The non-detection of the SIM card is not normal. However, it should be noted that the number 1 reason why this message appears is often related to your operator. Most people affected by the problem find a solution by ordering a new SIM card.
Beyond that, especially if you bought a second-hand smartphone, the problem may be of a hardware nature. First, try to clean the SIM drawer in which dust may have accumulated on the contacts using a needle or safety pin.
Clean the contacts visible on the SIM card in order to put the odds on your side, then reinsert the card in the drawer. Make sure that the SIM card is properly seated in the drawer, as described in the user manual.
If none of these tips solve the problem, we recommend that you contact Apple Service to schedule a repair.
Is it possible to use an iPhone without a SIM card?
Recent iPhones can be activated without a SIM card. Just pass the error message, connect the device to WiFi and complete the configuration. Without a SIM card, you can still use your applications and browse the internet via WiFi. However, it will be impossible to make calls or send and receive SMS.
Any apps that rely on single-use codes received via SMS may also no longer work. Note that iPhones since iPhone X are also compatible with eSIM which is a virtual SIM card – in addition to the classic SIM card. If the SIM slot seems faulty, you can try registering your smartphone’s eSIM with your carrier instead.
If it works you will then find access to all the services of the smartphone, SMS and calls included.
Can SIM card errors be caused by misconfiguration?
Yes. And it is possible to reset it or install new operator settings. To reset your carrier settings:
- Go into Settings > General > Cellular Data
- Go into Cellular data network
- Touch Reset settings
Carrier settings updates are usually delivered on demand (by contacting your carrier) and/or via Settings > General > Software Update.
