It is an unexpected success, to say the least. 35 years after the release of the original film, the Top Gun saga has panicked the counters for its return to dark rooms. As of this writing, this feature film has already grossed $1.355 billion at the global box office. A feat that is all the more impressive as cinema attendance is still lower than that observed before the pandemic.
Will we see a Top Gun 3 in the cinema?
We can therefore ask ourselves what is the secret of Top Gun: Maverick who allowed him to beat the big Marvel and DC blockbusters this year? The latter rely on a very large community of fans, and astronomical marketing budgets.
In an interview with the magazine Entertainment Weekly, the producer of the film, Jeremy Bruckheimer returned to this subject. There is no question for the latter to criticize superhero films too much, even if he subtly slips a few small spikes. According to him, viewers have seen too many special effects in cinemas in recent years. Therefore, when they are dealing with a film closer to reality, it arouses more interest. He specifies :
Audiences love Marvel and DC movies. They are beautifully made by very talented people. Sometimes you want to see something real, and that’s what Top Gun gave us… These airmen are protecting our country right now, they’re flying around the world, and you’re taking a ride with them. You see what they do, you see what their life is like, the trials and difficulties they have to go through. You really live it with our actors.
With such enthusiasm for Top Gun, it is in any case hardly surprising to see rumors of a third film with Tom Cruise reaching us. For the time being, the producers have not yet confirmed this information, even if they do not exclude it.
