Today is Wednesday and it’s movie day. This is an opportunity for French viewers to (finally) discover the Daniels’ latest film, Everything Everywhere All at Once. There is no better for the start of the school year. We give you five reasons to let yourself be tempted by this new film.
1) He was a hit all over the world
If we can discover Everything Everywhere All at Once in our dark rooms since today, it will have been necessary to wait for the film to arrive in France. Indeed, the Daniels’ latest film was released in March in the United States, Canada, Indonesia and Singapore. Then the feature film was offered a release in Russia, Australia, Portugal, Germany, the United Kingdom or Mexico towards the end of spring. In short, the film points the tip of its nose in a multitude of countries… Except at home. It will therefore have been necessary to wait 5 months for Everything Everywhere All at Once finds its way to our cinemas.
However, from the month of March, success is at the rendezvous for the film with Michelle Yeoh at the head of the bill. In the United States and Canada, it raised no less than $501,305 for its first weekend of operation. Even better, Everything Everywhere All at Once remained in the top 10 films in theaters worldwide for sixteen weeks. Last month, the film passed the 100 million dollar mark at the international box office, an impressive figure but above all a first for an independent post-pandemic film. And with its release in France, this figure is likely to rise further.
Whether Everything Everywhere All at Once attracts the curious, the spectators are not disappointed with the trip. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film gets an excellent rating of 95% while on IMDb, it gets a solid 8.2/10. In short, the Daniels’ latest film seems to have conquered the world. Some even speak of the best film of the year. A good reason to go to dark rooms today to form your own opinion and understand (or not) the hype that surrounds Everything Everywhere All at Once.
2) The “real life” multiverse
Well, it’s fine to be a hit all over the world, but what are we talking about? Everything Everywhere All at Once ? This new film tackles a very popular theme in recent months: that of the multiverse. If Marvel seems to have a stranglehold on the subject with the recent releases of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Loki or What if…?the Daniels decided otherwise.
Evelyn Wang is at her wit’s end. She is overwhelmed with debt, she no longer understands her daughter who is growing up, her husband wants a divorce, she does not like her job and she fears her father’s imminent arrival at her home. Until the day when an alternative version of her husband arrives and explains to her that there are a multitude of parallel universes. As she drifts from reality to reality and discovers who she could have been, Evelyn will have to save the world and her family at the same time. Everything Everywhere All at Once invites us to take part in a journey through the confusing multiverse, far from what Marvel has presented to us recently.
3) An original and ambitious concept
The plot has something to arouse our curiosity, that’s for sure. Les Daniels delivers a film far from what Hollywood has accustomed us to. Everything Everywhere All at Once comes out of the shackles, a real UFO in the cinematographic landscape that is all too often smooth and bland. The idea of projecting a mother into the multiverse is a gamble of the directors, but the success is definitely there. It denotes, but it’s for the best. One thing is certain: it is difficult to compare Everything Everywhere All at Once, the film having its own identity and a surprising concept. Les Daniels reinvents the idea we have of the multiverse and we are not going to complain about it.
A24 is in charge of producing and distributing Everything Everywhere All at Once, an independent company. But that didn’t stop him from serving us nuggets like Moonlight, Midsommar or lady bird. All the ingredients are there…
4) All genres at once
With the multiverse and a concept as original as it is ambitious, you might as well go straight ahead. Everything Everywhere All at Once does not want to fit into a box. That would be too simple. As a result, the film is a melting pot of genres: comedy, science fiction, action, drama, martial arts… Why choose when you can do it all?
The Daniels bets on madness and it works. If you’re having trouble finding common ground with your friends or family about what kind of movie you’re going to see together, Everything Everywhere All at Once should make everyone agree. It’s still a good thing. Joy, sadness and surprise, you are not going to be disappointed with the trip and you are likely to go through a range of emotions. With Everything Everywhere All at Onceyou watch a slew of different movies in one.
5) A crazy director duo
The Daniels is a director duo composed of Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan. The latter have a few music videos to their credit but above all a first film, released in 2016, and already, the wacky is there. Swiss Army Man with Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano came as a crazy surprise to anyone who saw it. Basically, a lost and desperate man on a desert island befriends a corpse (yes, yes, you read that right) and embarks with him on a journey as epic as it is unusual. After a convincing first attempt, the two directors seem to have wanted to keep their part of the absurd with Everything Everywhere All at Once.
The Daniels’ latest film is finally available in French cinemas. Whether you’re looking for originality and freshness, love the multiverse theme, or just curious about the how and why of that movie everyone’s talking about, you’re bound to have a good reason to go. see Everything Everywhere All at Once.
